Committee to Review the Criminal Justice Act Program
The Committee is charged with conducting a comprehensive and impartial review of the CJA program. The Committee will take a hard look at the strengths and weaknesses of the program, and invites participation from all stakeholders to accomplish this important task.
The Committee’s first hearing took place on November 16-17, 2015, in Santa Fe, New Mexico at the New Mexico State Capitol Building. The hearing was scheduled to coincide with the annual national Assistant Federal Defender training.
The Committee’s focus at this initial hearing was Criminal Justice Act issues involving Native Americans, the border, and training of criminal defense attorneys.
Melanie Morgan, CJA District Representative for the District of Kansas, testified at the committee hearing. A copy of her testimony is below, along with a link to the video (Melanie testified at Panel 5-Views from CJA Panel Attorneys).
