The Federal Public Defender Office recently learned that an individual received a phone call from an FPD phone number requesting payment on a criminal matter. Calls and emails such as this are fraudulent and are not connected to the FPD Office. Our office will never ask for payment in relation to criminal representation or for payment of a criminal fine or fee. The scammers may tell you not to contact anyone or take any other steps. This is a tactic to scare you. You are always welcome to call our main number at (785) 232-9828. Members of the public also are warned about any request to provide confidential information in response to callers or to an email. Initial contact between the Federal Public Defender’s Office and a potential client will be in connection with an appointment pursuant to the Criminal Justice Act. The Federal Public Defender’s Office will never request payment for its services, and initial phone contact by the Federal Public Defender’s Office to clients will never include requests for credit card numbers, bank accounts, or any other sensitive information. If you receive a call asking for this information, or if you have questions, please contact Erin Thompson, FPD Administrative Officer, at 913-551-6900 or erin_thompson@fd.org. If you do receive such a call, you may file a complaint with the FCC here: https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/spoofing-and-caller-id
